st bertrams main chamber
Pete and Martin in St Bertram's Cave

On 9/9/2007, conservation work was carried out by Eddie Potter, Martin Milner and Pete Ray. Some inscriptions found at the base of Skull Rift a few weeks ago were cleaned up and a second set of inscriptions (again previously unknown) were found on one wall of the main chamber.

Some of the inscriptions in the main chamber dated back to 1887 and some of the inscriptions at the base of Skull Rift dated back to 1837/9.

The ones in the main chamber were virtually invisible until we started cleaning the wall up!

We also cleaned up a small area of flowstone between the other two areas.

On 23/9/2007, Ed, Martin and Pete rigged Skull Rift for SRT and hauled the water containers and pressure sprayer up to the top of the rift ready for cleaning to start.

On 14/10/2007, Martin and Pete avoided the rain and took some photos of the flowstone at the top of Skull Rift.

On 21/10/2007, Ed, Martin and Pete were joined by Ian Morley. They all climbed Skull Rift using SRT and Ed and Ian took photos in the terminal grotto. While they were in there, Martin and Pete started cleaning up the flowstone in the main part of the rift.

On 16/12/2007, Ed, Martin and Pete finished cleaning the flowstone at the top of Skull Rift. During the visit they noticed that the majority of the clay floor inwards from the entrance chamber was cracked every couple of feet or so. Some of it was so loose that it could be rocked back and forth! There seemed to have been some seismic activity since the last visit.

Darfar / Dafar
You should be aware that Darfar (as in Darfar Bridge, Pot, etc.) is misspelt as Dafar on OS maps of a certain scale. On larger scaled (more detailed) maps it is correct as you can see on the excellent Magic web site. This map shows the correct spelling and this one the incorrect spelling. (Then of course there's Darfur, which is a place in Africa...)
