Hi this is Ian's page and here's a little bit of information on how i got into this wierd and wonderful (if slightly different) hobby...

It started March 2006 when me and Ed (also a member) became curious after Pete (also a member!) showed us one of the Mine addits (Dale Mine) which gave us a taste of this new underground world!

Shortly after this we heard of a caving shop in nearby Buxton. After a lengthy chat with the ownerwe left with copies of pages out of a book about Derbyshire caves. This contains some handdrawn maps of where the caves were (or so we thought!). We went in search of the various caves by walking along the dry riverbed, found the obvious ones but became easily confused.

It was about then when we stumbled across Martin Milner (our club chairman!) who was pretending to be a walker sitting eating his lunch on top of an entrance to a cave. He obviously saw us all kitted up and wanted to steer clear! It wasn't until we noticed a climbing rope by him that we realised "walkers dont carry rope!". So we asked him. Somewhat reserved at first, he agreed to show us where the caves were 'hidden'. Soon after we realised this guy knew this area like the back of his hand.

We arranged to meet up again when he realised how keen we were. From then on it became a weekly event. We purchased 'the gear' and introduced Martin to Pete, Chris and Graham.

Unfortunately Chris and Graham have since left the club leaving just the 4 of us to enjoy some exploring, digging and conserving of the local caves.

Recently we've been joined by Dave (who likes to talk about the 80's alot - couldn't resist Dave!!). Lets hope there will be more new members to come.

Pete and I also have an interest in Landrovers which helps greatly with transporting ourselves and gear to the entrance of some harder to reach caves. It also helps being friends with the local farmers and landowners!

Here's an insight into my non-caving life:

Weekday toy - essential for making the cave meets on time!

Weekend Toy (essential for getting the kit and members to the caves!):

 At work!

Old work - giving the driver a good telling off!

Home - front (mine is 3rd door from left but none of the windows)

Rear - Mine is the bottom 4 windows, both car spaces and rear garden (behind fence)

Lounge! (abit messier than normal!) Spot the caving pic!

Darfar / Dafar
You should be aware that Darfar (as in Darfar Bridge, Pot, etc.) is misspelt as Dafar on OS maps of a certain scale. On larger scaled (more detailed) maps it is correct as you can see on the excellent Magic web site. This map shows the correct spelling and this one the incorrect spelling. (Then of course there's Darfur, which is a place in Africa...)
